BRASILIA, Brazil –
The Brazilian Aerospace Operations Command recently hosted the Global Sentinel (GS) 25 mid-planning conference (MPC), marking the first time that a GS event was hosted outside of the United States – emphasizing Brazil's prominence in the space sector and highlighting the importance of global collaboration.
The MPC was hosted Nov. 20-22, 2024 at Brazil’s Space Operations Center and had representation from approximately 30 countries, both in person and virtually, to discuss the next iteration of the GS25 capstone event.
Global Sentinel is an annual, unclassified security cooperation event to strengthen and grow international partnerships by enabling experimentation supporting space domain awareness, space situational awareness, space security, operational safety, and nontraditional data integration to improve interoperability and readiness with U.S., international, and commercial partners.
“This is one of the most important exercises focused on the space domain,” said Brazilian Air Force Colonel Alessandro Sorgini D’Amato, Brazilian Space Operations Center vice chief. “The scenarios are tailored to this domain and involve countries from all over the world.
“In this context, Brazil… is sending a clear message that multilateral collaboration is essential for operations in the space domain.”
During the three-day event, the agenda included detailed planning activities, technical presentations, and debates aimed at aligning GS25 objectives. Participants discussed the GS25 scenario, operational interoperability, and the strengthening of international partnerships.
The Air Forces of Japan, France, and Germany gave detailed presentations on their space capabilities and actions aimed at consolidating safe and efficient operations. This technical exchange reinforced the collective commitment to building a safer and more collaborative space environment.
“For Japan, Brazil has an advantageous geographical position, located at the opposite side of the globe,” said Japanese Air Self Defense Force Lt. Col. Tomonori Hirano, Foreign Liaison Officer to U.S. Space Command. “GS events enable us to partner with nations in multiple locations in favor of space collaboration. Besides that, I’m convinced that multinational, in-person engagements given by GS promotes and fosters mutual trust and understanding, as we enter the new era.”
The GS25 final planning conference will occur in March 2025 in Colorado Springs, CO, and the GS25 capstone event is scheduled to begin in April 2025 at Vandenberg Space Force Base, CA.
